Big solar co-op

Solar panels

Delivered by Sharenergy Co-operative

With support from The MCS Foundation, Sharenergy Co-operative has taken significant strides toward creating a UK-wide, volunteer-owned solar initiative. The Big Solar Co-op project is laying the groundwork for a sustainable future by harnessing the power of community-driven solar energy.

Key Achievements:

  • Operational Solar Sites: Installed over 1 MW of rooftop solar PV capacity, with lots of  additional projects in the pipeline.
  • Community Engagement: working closely with community groups and community buildings in Derbyshire, Birmingham, the Forest of Dean and elsewhere
  • Volunteer Mobilisation: Engaged a growing network of passionate volunteers, providing training and support to scale efforts nationally.
  • Long-Term Sustainability: Big Solar Co-op is now an independent entity with over 600 members and a clear path to self-sufficiency, bolstered by its ethical and community-focused approach.

Looking Ahead:

Over the next two years, the Big Solar Co-op aims to install an additional 5 MW of rooftop solar, attract new investments, and further empower local communities to lead the transition to clean energy.

We’re proud to have supported this innovative project, which demonstrates the power of community action in tackling the climate crisis.
