Retrofit Career Pathways

People in meeting

A London, Surrey, and Hertfordshire initiative combining careers events and an AI-powered tool to connect young people and career changers with roles in the retrofit and green construction sector.

Delivered by GoodPeople through their Net Zero Careers service

The UK’s retrofit sector faces a significant and growing workforce challenge. With millions of homes requiring energy efficiency upgrades to meet national net zero targets, there is an urgent need for skilled workers across a range of roles – from Retrofit Operatives and Heat Pump Installers to Resident Liaison Officers and Scheme Administrators.

The Retrofit Career Pathways project is a targeted, place-based initiative connecting young people and career changers across London, Surrey, and Hertfordshire to employment opportunities in retrofit and green construction. Working with an established network of over 100 referral partners – including Jobcentre Plus, housing associations, colleges, and employability providers – alongside 20+ employer partners such as Wates, Axis, Durkan and Sureserve – the project is designed to address both sides of the workforce challenge: supporting industry partners to overcome critical skills shortages and helping individuals access good, sustainable work.

Funding from The MCS Foundation has helped to deliver:

  • 7 careers fairs and net zero workshops, reaching over 2,000 candidates and engaging 30+ employers across Central London, West London, Surrey, and East London – including specialist sessions in a prison setting and dedicated Women in Construction events.
  • An AI-powered careers tool, available on the Net Zero Careers website, co-designed with employers and training providers, offering personalised and impartial guidance into retrofit roles, local training opportunities, and live vacancies.
  • Pre- and post-session impact assessment, demonstrating an 83% improvement in candidates’ understanding of retrofit roles and a 37% uplift in confidence in searching for roles or training following workshop attendance.
