MCS Foundation welcomes ESNZ call for removal of policy costs on electricity

22 May 2025

The MCS Foundation has welcomed the findings of the ESNZ report, Retrofitting Homes for Net Zero. The report calls for the rebalancing of policy costs and reducing the cost of electricity relative to gas in order to support low-carbon heating.

Garry Felgate, Chief Executive of The MCS Foundation, which provided evidence for the report, said, “Across the energy sector and across the political spectrum, we consistently hear that the UK’s disproportionately high electricity costs are holding back the transition to low-carbon, low-bill heat pumps.

“The Government must remove social and environmental levies from electricity, to ensure that heat pumps are always cheaper to run than fossil-fuelled boilers. Independent analysis shows that removing levies on electricity would save households as much as £300 a year.”
