Colleges and FE training providers are being offered grants of up to £10,000 to support in the roll-out of the UK’s first ever heat pump apprenticeship.  

Students will be starting courses for the Low-Carbon Heating Technician Apprenticeship at colleges and FE providers from September. The course aims to give apprentices the skills to install and maintain heat pumps, as well as solar heating and other low carbon heating systems.  

The MCS Foundation, which helped develop the Low-Carbon Heating Technician Apprenticeship in partnership with employers in the domestic heating sector and IfATE, says that the apprenticeship is needed to help recruit a new wave of skilled workers in the transition to net zero.  

To assist with the roll-out of the apprenticeship, the MCS Foundation is making grants of £10,000 available for training providers to help them develop facilities to deliver practical training for the LCHTA. In particular, the grants are available to help training providers purchase equipment for use in training courses, although other needs will be considered.  

Alastair Mumford, Programme Director at the MCS Foundation, said: “It is fantastic to see training providers up and down the country offering apprenticeships in the low-carbon heating engineering that we need for the future. Students enrolling on these courses will have the chance to learn skills for a job in a growing sector, and to tackle the climate emergency.
