The Energy Bill

Consumers reviewing energy bills

Stopping increased fuel bills

The UK Government’s 2023 Energy Bill originally included a provision for a proposed hydrogen levy, which could potentially have been be applied to all gas and electricity bills.

MCS Foundation supported a campaign to remove this levy.

Reviews showed that if such levy was placed on taxpayers, it could increase the average dual-fuel household’s energy bills by £119 per year. Moreover, research showed that the levy would disproportionately impact people on lower incomes, who often have the least energy-efficient homes and spend more on heating and electricity.

Ultimately the Government amended the bill to see ‘gas shippers’ bear the cost.
