Extend the Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Heat pump installation

The Government launched the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) in May 2022 to encourage people to switch their gas boiler for a low-carbon heat pump. The scheme was originally due to run until 2025, with £450m funding committed the scheme. We successfully advocated for extra funding and an extension of the timeframe of the scheme, with an extra £1.5bn committed to the scheme, and it being extended to 2028. The scheme now offers a £7,500 grant for air-source and ground-source heat pumps, with funding to support around 200,000installations.

The BUS, alongside installing heat pumps in new homes and introducing the Clean Heat Market Mechanism, would maximises the chance of reaching the Government’s target of 600,000 heat pump installations a year by 2028.

We also wanted the grants under the BUS for Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP) to be increased from £7,500 to at least £9,000-£10,000 to help boost the GSHP industry within the UK – something we are still asking Government to support.

We also continue to ask Government to publicise the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, and promote the benefits of heat pumps as we drive the transition away from expensive, unsustainable fossil gas.
