Policy recommendations
Our vision is to make every UK home carbon-free. The MCS Foundation helps drive positive change to decarbonise homes heat and energy through our work programmes, grants and advocacy. We support engagement programmes, fund research and facilitate innovative solutions to drive widespread adoption of renewables to help achieve a Net Zero future. In addition, the Foundation oversees the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) which defines, maintains and improves quality standards for renewable energy at buildings scale.
We’re asking the Government to commit to implementing the CHMM at the earliest opportunity.
New Building Standards should require a meaningful deployment of solar panels on all new homes, and include battery storage and heat pumps as the default. MCS installation standards need to be mandated.
We’re asking the Government to move social and environmental levies from electricity bills to elsewhere in the tax system.
The height limit for small-scale wind should be increased from 11.1m to 30m under permitted development, with the blade length less than 8m long.
We’re asking that the Government prepare the local grid in time to enable net zero.
We’re asking the Government to extend the zero rating of VAT on domestic renewables and energy efficiency measures until 2030 at the very least.
